How tax-default sales work in Ohio

Ohio is a hybrid (lien and deed) state with tax lien sales as a secondary path. Sales are administered at the county level by the County Treasurer / Auditor + Prosecutor / Board of Revision / Sheriff under Ohio Rev. Code Ch. 5721, including §§5721.18 and 5721.30-.43.

When a parcel becomes eligible. Certified delinquent land may proceed to foreclosure; qualifying tax liens may also be packaged/sold as tax certificates.

When sales happen. Judicial or administrative tax-foreclosure schedules are local; counties also may sell tax certificates under statutory programs.

How bidding works. Foreclosure: public sale/highest bid subject to statutory minimum; tax-certificate sales follow statutory county method.

What the winning bidder gets. Real property through foreclosure and/or tax certificate lien. Owner redemption after the sale: Yes.

Verify before you bid. Dates, deposits and bidding rules are set by each Ohio county and change with every sale. BackLot summarizes official sources and links to them; it is not legal or investment advice. Read the current notice and the data disclaimer before relying on anything here.
